Lekker koffie

Coffee Graduates to Health Food Status

Your favorite morning brew has a surprising new perk.

Good news for the 80 percent of Americans who down an average of 3.2 cups of java a day: Your liver loves it. And because the liver is your body’s vital detox center, that’s a big health plus. It’s not the caffeine. Apparently, it’s the antioxidants or other compounds in coffee that keep your liver humming. So if you were just thinking you could do with a cup of joe, go for it.

The liver is a major multitasker. It’s a housekeeper: It filters toxins from the blood, cleaning pollutants, alcohol, useless residues, nicotine, and other garbage out of the body. It’s also a stock clerk: It keeps extra carbohydrates on hand and releases them when blood sugar levels are low, plus it warehouses fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E, and K for future use. It’s a body builder, too: The liver makes proteins to build muscles, and it produces bile, which is needed to digest fat. fika.JPG

Evidence that coffee takes some stress off the liver was discovered when scientists determined that coffee lovers have fewer liver enzymes in their blood than do coffee shunners — and that’s a good thing. Liver enzymes are an indication of liver damage. What’s more, coffee’s protective effect was even more pronounced in moderate to heavy drinkers, even though alcohol can be particularly taxing on the liver (however, there’s no way coffee can make up for the damage that long-term heavy alcohol consumption does to the liver). Ready for a refill?

Here we are having coffee with Sam in St Paul last April(that’s the fourth month of the year).  Blips is behind the camera.

It is getting to be State Fair time and I was just remembering what a wonderful time we had with ElsMarStel.  I wish we could do it again with you two but this year we go by ourselves.  Anyway, here is a joke I got in my email today from my gf.  I tried to send it to you but it got returned.  Enjoy!!!!

MORRIS AND HIS WIFE ESTHER WENT TO

THE STATE FAIR EVERY YEAR.

EVERY YEAR, MORRIS WOULD SAY,

“ESTHER, I ‘D LIKE TO RIDE IN THAT

HELICOPTER.”

ESTHER ALWAYS REPLIED,

” I KNOW MORRIS, BUT THAT HELICOPTER RIDE

IS 50 DOLLARS AND 50 DOLLARS IS 50 DOLLARS.”

A FEW YEARS LATER, ESTHER AND MORRIS WENT TO THE FAIR.

MORRIS SAID, “ESTHER, I’M 85 YEARS OLD.

IF I DON’T RIDE THAT HELICOPTER NOW,

I MIGHT NEVER GET ANOTHER CHANCE.”

ESTHER REPLIED, “MORRIS,

THAT HELICOPTER IS 50 DOLLARS AND 50 DOLLARS

IS 50 DOLLARS.”

THE PILOT OVERHEARD THE COUPLE. HE SAID,

“FOLKS, I’LL MAKE YOU A DEAL.

I’LL TAKE THE BOTH OF YOU FOR A RIDE.

IF YOU CAN STAY QUIET FOR THE ENTIRE

RIDE AND NOT SAY A WORD,

I WON’T CHARGE YOU! BUT IF YOU SAY ONE WORD,

IT’S 50 DOLLARS.”

MORRIS AND ESTHER AGREED — AND UP THEY WENT.

THE PILOT DID ALL KINDS OF FANCY MANEUVERS.

BUT NOT A WORD WAS HEARD.

HE DID HIS DAREDEVIL TRICKS OVER AND OVER AGAIN,

BUT STILL NOT A WORD.

WHEN THEY LANDED, THE PILOT TURNED TO MORRIS.

HE SAID, “BY GOLLY, I DID EVERYTHING I COULD TO GET YOU

TO YELL OUT, BUT YOU DIDN’T. I’M IMPRESSED!”

MORRIS REPLIED, “WELL, I WAS GOING TO SAY SOMETHING

WHEN ESTHER FELL OUT,

BUT 50 DOLLARS IS 50 DOLLARS”.

Each year there is a family reunion on my dad’s side.  So if your last name starts with a Gri….. then here are some of your American relatives :)   There were 49 people there and one dog so I am calling it an even 50. The food was fantastic…as you can see, there are alot of good cooks in the family.  Blips favorite food was the Swedish meatballs, banana cream pie(thanks Mary) and potato salad(thanks Mom).  Mine was the taco salad(thanks Orleen), vegie pizza, and chocolate-kaluah bundt cake(thanks Nancy)

The first group picture is Cort and Helen’s family.

The larger group is John and Catherine’s family.  If you want to know who anybody else is…email me.  I don’t like to put names on the internet.

Thanks Grace and Gary(the other one, not my brother), we had a really great time.  And congratulations on your engagement!  That was a nice surprise.

Mona and I went for a walk the other day.carver1.jpg  It was going to be 100 F so I thought we should go for a walk in the woods where it was shady most of the way.  When we got to the picnic area by the lake, I saw the day camp had left all their things on the picnic tables.  We walked back that way about 1.5 hours later and everything was still there by itself including this walkie talkie.  This was about 2 blocks from the beach.  Minnesota nice…..don’t touch!carver3.jpg

The beach was almost deserted except for some brave parents(see the guy in the shade) who brought their kids for swim lessons.carver2.jpg  When we got home I notice it was 98 F.  jeeeeezzzzz. Mona laid on the bathroom floor in the basement to cool off.  And I was quite grateful for the a/c :)
Then last night we habird_catch.jpgd a big storm with lots of wind and it rained 4 inches.  We found this bird stuck in our basketball hoop.  Blips is not happy.  He has forbidden these lovely birds from the yard :(
